Pan Western Has taken the for front in purchasing the newest trucks for 2007 – not the norm for the industry, The U.S. automotive industry is not the only one watching heavy duty truck sales numbers. According to a recent survey by the British Web site 4just-auto.com, U.S. truck manufacturers estimates that this year’s sales of Class 8 trucks will dwindle 43 percent to 182,400 units.

“The pre-buy behavior of last year’s overstated U.S. market meant that truck manufacturers fully expected the drop to follow and are adjusting capacity accordingly,” the Web site stated in a news release.

More stringent emissions standards required by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency beginning Jan. 1, 2007, ushered in a rush of pre-buy orders ahead of the emissions deadline.

In November 2006, DaimlerChrysler predicted that higher-priced, lower-polluting models would drive the sales market down in spring and summer 2007, with sales falling 39 percent from 2006.

Tom Graff of Pan Western emphasizes that Goodyear is a perfect choice for Pan Western and underlines our Safety record for Heavl Haul trucking industry in Nevada and Arizona market place.

Goodyear’s pioneering interstate Wingfoot Express truck line celebrated its 90th birthday Monday. Back in 1917, a five-ton Packard with a 10-foot-high, specially built body established the first interstate trucking route with regular nonstop runs from the Akron tire factory to the company’s tire fabric mill in Connecticut. The one truck eventually blossomed into a fleet of trucks, Goodyear commercial tire systems, said he appreciates the company’s history in trucking, but “is especially proud of our kinship with America’s truck drivers.

The company still considers truck drivers as heroes of the highway, and for the past 24 years has recognized drivers who help others in a time of need. California FedEx Freight truck driver Ed Regener, the 2006 Goodyear North America Highway Hero, recently was honored for saving two men in a fiery crash on Interstate 10 near Phoenix.

“The Wingfoot Express always has been about the customer and today, it symbolizes 90 years of delivering business solutions for our customers from the time the original tire is placed on a new truck and through its life cycle,” he said.

A 1917 Packard Model E 3-ton truck – similar to the models used in the first fleet Commercial Tire Systems, the Wingfoot Express truck will celebrate the 90th anniversary this year with stops at Wingfoot Tire Center grand-openings nationwide.

Wingfoot Commercial Tire Systems LLC, a subsidiary of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., operates more than 173 commercial tire centers in North America. It is part of a strong national network of tire service centers that serve large nationwide fleets as well as regional and local transport companies

CEO of PanWestern.net looks into Hybrid technology for Heavy Haul Trucking division; given the rising fuel costs and the destabilized middle east, PanWestern.net has been keeping their options open!

Peterbilt Motors Co. continues development and testing of a full range of vehicles equipped with advanced hybrid technologies that increase fuel efficiency, reduce emissions and improve service requirements.

“Peterbilt’s hybrid initiatives include development of both medium- and heavy-duty vehicle platforms and for both on-highway and vocational applications. We will introduce hybrid vehicle solutions to serve a broad range of business requirements, helping customers reduce operating expenses and fostering greater environmental stewardship,” says Bill Jackson, Peterbilt general manager and Paccar vice president.

At this month’s Mid-America Trucking Show, Peterbilt announced the latest of its hybrid initiatives – a hybrid electric Class 8 Model 386 configured for long-haul applications. It combines the aerodynamic efficiency of the Model 386 with a parallel-type “direct” electric hybrid system.

“Peterbilt is actively developing and testing four distinct hybrid technology vehicle applications,” says Peterbilt Chief Engineer Landon Sproull. “We are proactively researching and testing hybrid technologies, forging strategic partnerships with key suppliers and customers, and integrating hybrid solutions into our already fuel-efficient vehicle designs.
According to Sproull, the four vehicle platforms are:
• A hybrid electric heavy-duty vehicle for Heavy-haul applications.

• A hybrid electric medium-duty vehicle for pick-up and delivery applications.

• A hybrid electric medium-duty vehicle equipped for stationary PTO applications.

• And a hydraulic hybrid heavy-duty vehicle for vocational and stop-and-go applications.

“Focusing our resources on those four key areas allow us to serve a wide range of customer needs and fulfill market requirements,” says Sproull. “Each of these vehicle platforms addresses unique customer concerns to reduce operating expenses and comply with various regulatory requirements.”

The heavy-duty hybrid electric Model 386, configured for on-highway use, is being developed in conjunction with Eaton and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. It is currently in the testing and evaluation phase and is expected to be available in 2010. Wal-Mart, which operates the nation’s second largest private fleet, is supporting development by helping validate the concept and refine the final design.

During third-party testing, the Eaton Hybrid Power System has routinely achieved a 5-7 percent fuel savings versus comparable, non-hybrid models.

The heavy-duty hybrid electric power system features an automated manual transmission with a parallel-type “direct” hybrid system, incorporating an electric motor/generator located between the output of an automated clutch and the input to Eaton’s Fuller UltraShift transmission. The system captures energy generated by the diesel engine and recovers energy normally lost during braking and stores the energy in batteries. That electric torque is then sent through the motor/generator and blended with engine torque to improve vehicle performance, operate the engine in a more fuel-efficient range for a given speed and/or operate only with electric power in certain situations.

According to Sproull, in this heavy-duty application of Eaton’s hybrid power technology, fuel efficiency and emissions reductions are best achieved both while the truck is rolling or standing still. The system’s batteries power the heating, air conditioning and vehicle electrical systems while the engine is off.

Peterbilt has engineered a hybrid electric system, developed in conjunction with Eaton Corp., with its Class 6 Peterbilt Model 330 configured for local pick-up and delivery applications and its Class 7 Model 335 equipped with a fully integrated Terex bucket lift body.

The Model 330 is powered by the Paccar PX-6 engine rated at 240 horsepower and 560 pounds-feet of torque. With the hybrid system engaged, horsepower increases to 300 and torque to 860 pounds-feet. This configuration is ideal for stop-and-go use, such as urban pick-up and delivery, with the hybrid system resulting in 30 to 40 percent greater fuel savings by using electric power to accelerate the vehicle from a stop.

The Model 335 is also powered by the Paccar PX-6 engine which regenerates lithium-ion batteries to electrically operate the PTO. This application of hybrid technology is well suited for municipal and utility applications.

Fuel use, emissions and noise are greatly reduced, and the crane apparatus can operate for up to 28 minutes solely on battery power. The engine automatically starts to regenerate the batteries, which takes approximately 4.5 minutes. During typical stationary operation of the PTO, the engine needs to run only about 1/6th of the time versus non-hybrid vehicles.

Both medium duty hybrid trucks are in limited production this year with full production expected for 2008.

All our featured heavy haul companies have certain qualifications required before you can apply, each company Heavy haul – Crane rigging – Reefer transport – Double Belly – and Pneumatics trucking has it’s own set of qualifications below some general recommendations are listed to aid you in gaining your trucker qualifications. Trucker applicants must be at least 21 years old, while many states allow those 18 and older to drive by truckers and heavy haul western states within state borders, federal regulations require drivers operating across state lines to be at least 21 years of age. Most heavy haul companies request applicants have no previous felony convictions and no positive drug test. Indeed, some trucker companies request a drug test before commencing employment with the company. A trucker must have no current clinical diagnosis of alcoholism, and must not use any illegal drugs. Every trucker must have a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) issued by one (and only one) state. Specific endorsements, such as heavy haul loads, may be required depending upon the company’s needs and the type of equipment you will be operating. Holding a CDL does not indicate that the holder is a trained or experienced driver, only that the trucker has passed minimal skills and knowledge tests concerning the type of vehicle the trucker proposes to drive.

The U.S. Department of Transportation requires drive by truckers to have a complete physical examination every two years. A trucker must have a minimum of 20/40 vision in each eye, with or without corrective lenses, and have a 70 degree field of vision in each eye. The U.S. Department of Transportation sets safety rules for interstate drive by truckers, such as vehicle and heavy haul inspection and hours of service. Strict regulations forbid the use of alcohol or drugs prior to or while operating a commercial vehicle. Criminal Driving Record: A trucker and heavy haul carrier must not have been convicted of a felony involving the use of a motor vehicle; a crime involving drugs; driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol; or hit-and-run driving which resulted in injury or death.
The wreck initially occurred at about 9:30 a.m. on eastbound I-10 approximately 25 miles south of Phoenix when a Volvo sedan rear-ended a Ford Mustang, sending the Ford into oncoming traffic in the westbound lanes, said Department of Public Safety Officer James Oien.

Clinton D. Elwell, who was driving a westbound tractor-trailer rig, had to swerve to avoid the Mustang, and the truck went into the median and then off the side of the highway, where it rolled, Oien said.

A Mazda struck Elwell’s truck as it went out of control, and two people from Tucson were slightly injured. Elwell’s swerve likely saved the lives of those in the Mustang, Oien said. The wreck backed up highway traffic for about 10 miles in each direction.

DOT Complete 3-year Safety Study

Freightliner LLC said it has completed a significant three-year study with the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) – a field-operational test of Electronically Controlled Braking Systems (ECBS) and other safety technologies.

The study’s results will be used to improve truck safety systems’ performance, reliability, durability and maintainability.

“With the massive amount of data we collected and provided to the DOT, they’ll be equipped to draw conclusions about stability and braking systems that may reduce rear- end, lane change and merge collisions, lane departure, rollover and understeer and oversteer instability – ultimately saving lives,” said Scott Smith, executive engineer for Freightliner LLC.

The study tested the compatibility of combinations of tractors and trailers equipped with ABS, ECBS, disc and drum brakes, and enabled safety technologies. These technologies included adaptive cruise control (ACC), Yaw Stability Control, Roll Stability Control, and air disc brakes.

In 2003, the DOT awarded the cooperative research project to Freightliner LLC and its team, which included Wal-Mart, Battelle, Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC, Meritor WABCO and the U.S. Army Aberdeen Test Center.

Freightliner LLC collaborated with Companies to dedicate a test fleet of 48 new Freightliner Columbia tractors with 58-inch SleeperCabs to the project. The trucks were equipped with on-board computers, ECBS and ABS. Similarly, Wal-Mart agreed to outfit 100 new Great Dane trailers with the technology required of the field test. The fleet was then operated out of a distribution center in Loveland, Colo., to collect vehicle onboard system data, maintenance data and driver experience data.

The Freightliner tractors were separated into two groups. The first group consisted of 40 tractors and 60 trailers that were used to determine the compatibility and performance of unmatched combinations of tractors and trailers equipped with ECBS or ABS.

The second group of eight tractors was used to measure ECBS and ECBS-enabled safety technologies on matched tractor-trailers with brake control systems from the same manufacturer.

Making one or more 300-mile round-trips a day, each Freightliner truck distributed perishable and dry goods between Wal-Mart hubs, distribution centers and outlying stores.

Data was recorded over an initial six-month period from May to October 2005 with enabled technologies in the vehicles turned off. During the second six-month period from November 2005 to April 2006, the technologies were fully functional and interactive.

“Conducting this comparative test over a 12-month period allowed us to look closely at the vehicles’ complex configurations,” said Smith. “We were able to gather substantial data by operating the vehicles in a real-world operating environment – as opposed to a simulated test – and supply the DOT with critical safety data for evaluation.”

DOT is still analyzing the results of the test. more info here

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. — Espar Heater Systems, which manufactures and supplies anti-idling technologies to the trucking industry, has announced the development of a system called Sure Start. This package, currently available through Espar’s aftermarket dealer organization, consists of the Espar Hydronic 5 Coolant Heater and Arctic Fox “Hot Foxes.”

Espar officials said they have addressed the concerns of customers about the ability to start the new EPA-compliant engines in cold weather, given the new fuels and, in some cases, the addition of bio-diesel fuel.

The company’s solution was to engineer a system that heats both the engine and the fuel tanks, including the fuel being delivered to the engine and heaters. PanWestern has been Number#1 for Reefer Transport in the southern nevada marketplace in 2006, for commercial trucking solutions call us today!

The Daily Sentinel

About 2 miles of the southbound lanes on Southwest Stallings Drive in Nacogdoches were closed Thursday afternoon after a tractor-trailer carrying a 122-ton pipe threatened to lose its load and parked in the left lane, blocking traffic. The 180-foot-long pipe, with a diameter of 14 feet and shaped like a rocket, sat on the edge of the loop between state Hwy. 21 and Old Tyler Road for several hours until a crane could lift the pipe long enough to repair the trailer.

Across the median, the northbound lanes served two-way traffic for 2 miles, and slowed traffic and backed it up for a mile north and south.

On its way to a Texas City refinery from Longview, the semi, owned by Emmert International Trucking, hauled the heavy load on two trailers. To mount the huge pipe on the rear trailer, several 15-inch by 15-inch timbers were laid beneath the pipe to support its weight.

About 11 a.m., in front of the Texas Thunder Harley Davidson shop, a timber snapped, the load shifted and the rear trailer drifted to the left, according to Roger Thomas, a truck driver from Karl’s Escort Service, a Jefferson company hired to escort the load. The truck pulled to the median, digging a rut 150 feet long in the grass.

Nacogdoches police officers began routing traffic to the right shoulder of the southbound lanes, but the soggy ground next to the shoulder began to collapse under the weight of traffic, according to officer Mark Hurst. When the Texas Department of Transportation took control of the scene about 1 p.m., they rerouted traffic into the northbound lanes.

About 3 p.m., a crane from Easley’s Crane and Rigging in Lufkin arrived to lift the pipe, so Thomas could straighten the rear trailer and replace the timber that had broken.
